SPM 1400E

With Chord Electronics Limited's considerable experience in the design and manufacture of the world's best consumer and professional amplifiers, we are proud to announce our latest design of power amplifier utilising our high frequency power supply techniques and our own proprietary lateral structure dual-die MOSFETs. This amplifier provides all the benefits of mono amplification whilst retaining all of the much loved qualities of Chord Electronics amplifiers. Improvements in capacitor technology have boosted secondary reservoir levels to 94,000 µF storing over 381 Joules of energy. A "Superamp" in all but dimensions, this amplifier is for those whose goal is direct comparison between live and recorded music, a sentiment echoed by reviewer and customers alike.

A high current mains filter ensures that the amplifier is shielded from disturbed mains as well as ensuring that the mains is untouched by emissions from the amplifier. The output from the power supply uses a truly innovative "Dynamic Coupling" technique whereby the positive and negative rails are mutually coupled by a strong magnetic flux. The result being that if a high demand is put on one rail, the energy required is actually drawn equally from both rails. This keeps the amplifier balanced dynamically and the reference point perfectly clean.

SPM 650

Introducing our new entry level power amplifier the SPM650. With our considerable experience in the design and manufacture of the world's best consumer and professional amplifiers, this latest design of power amplifier utilises our high frequency power supply techniques and our own proprietary lateral structure dual-die MOSFETs. The SPM650 retains the clarity and style of our larger amplifiers but in a more compact case.

The SPM 650 is a full width design capable of driving low impedance loudspeakers, and delivers 130 watts rms per channel into 8 ohms or 170 watts rms per channel into 4 ohms. The dynamics of the SPM 650 will indeed bring you closer to the music.

The SPM 650 comes fully loaded with both balanced and single input connections and gold plated speaker binding posts to accept both spade or banana cable connections. Machined from solid aluminium the SPM650 has a superb rigid construction that gives unsurpassed vibration damping with stunning looks to match.

SPM 1050

The SPM1050 is the latest addition to our range of stereo power amplifiers. Using the latest low distortion amplifier circuitry with our own proprietary lateral structure dual-die MOSFETs the SPM1050 is able to drive more difficult loudspeaker loads with clarity and precision.

The heart of the amplifier is powered using our own 2KW high frequency switch mode power supply with our unique dynamic coupling. This allows instantaneous power to be taken from both power rails simultaneously when the music demands, giving perfect balance and dynamic precision. This technology is complemented by a large bank of energy storage capacitors that are 'recharged' by the power supply many thousands of times a second giving the amplifier huge reserves and the ability to react effortlessly to any signal. Unobtrusive protection circuitry constantly monitors the amplifier status and using magnetic current sensing will shut down the SPM1050 in the event of a short circuit, or dc overload. Delivering a comfortable 200W rms into 8O the SPM1050 will be the perfect accompaniment to most loudspeakers and can be used for stereo or as part of a multichannel system when combined with further amplification.

Connectivity is achieved via true balanced XLR style or RCA phono inputs and two pairs of loudspeaker outputs with gold plated connections. Simplicity of operation is retained with a single power button to switch the SPM1050 out of standby with a short delay before output relays internally connect the loudspeaker outputs. Status is indicated on the faceplate by a simple two LED sequence showing power and relay functions.

Externally the casework is machined from solid aluminium to give our trademark looks and rigid damping that eliminates vibration. Optional integra leg system can be added to further enhance this.

The SPM1050 builds on our considerable experience in the design and manufacture of the world's best consumer and professional amplifiers and with stunning looks and simplicity of operation the SPM1050 is the perfect addition to any system.

SPM 4000

Much of what Chord has achieved is the result of using innovative, leading edge technology. For example, we believe that we are unique in using the technique of 'dynamic coupling' of the power supply rails. Whatever transient demand is presented to the amplifier stages, the positive and negative rails remain in perfect equilibrium, with each compensating for the demands made on the other. This means that power delivery is always balanced and free from ground loop modulation distortion.

This, combined with enormous reserves of instantly delivered, precisely controlled power is what makes the SPM 4000 sound so effortless. The power supply rails operate nominally at ± 110 volts, well above that which most amplifiers can accommodate. This and other advanced techniques enables the ultra high frequency low ESR power supply to store a great deal more energy far more efficiently. Clipping is virtually impossible. Furthermore, compared to other amplifiers of asimilar power rating the SPM 4000 weighs in at a mere 50Kg. Another new technique is used to protect the amplifier against overload, internal and external short circuits. The output signal path is totally free of any fuses or sound-degrading resistive components often employed for overload sensing. The SPM 4000 is designed to surpass the highest European safety and electromagnetic interference standards.

The amplifier sections are also highly sophisticated designs that make the most of the best high voltage, lateral structure MOSFETs available, 32 x 150 watt devices per channel. Combining the subtlety and musicality of a good valve design with the punch and accuracy of 'state of the art' solid state products. The result is a 'sliding bias' class A/B design with all drive circuitry operating in class A. At usual listening levels, most of the music will be reproduced in class A. Chord's no-compromise design philosophy means there is no better built amplifier. Individually hand-crafted, it is constructed to aerospace standards from the circuit boards up.
